Sen. Warren and Rep. Cummings Forum Asks for Student Debt Feedback

Today, the Middle Class Prosperity Project held a forum on “Tackling the Student Debt Crisis.” Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Elijah E. Cummings hosted panelists at University of Massachusetts in Boston to discuss how the increasing cost of college and student loan debt are threatening the American middle class. The panel comes on the heels of Sen. Warren reintroducing her student loan refinancing bill. Panelists included the chancellor of UMass Boston, the director of the Student Loan Borrower Assistance Project at NCLC, the CFPB Student Loan Ombudsman, and a Harvard professor of education and economics.

Additionally, parent and student loan borrowers spoke to the challenges and hardships they are facing. It was an emotional panel where students spoke to their personal debt and how it will follow them for a long time following graduation. Sen. Warren and Rep. Cummings are pioneering the fight to tackle student debt, and were appreciative of panelists’ testimony.
